Epic Escapers,

So over the years I’ve been asked to draw many things. Some of these came as the result of patrons’ interested in a specific image. Some came as a result of the demands of a particular publisher. And of course, many others have come from the desire to just draw. It is a passion I’ve held since I was a wee child, after all. I wish I could publish the drawings I’ve done containing mainstream characters, like the X-Men, Justice League, and the Avengers. However, since I don’t own those copyrights I just can’t do that.

Anyway, drawings that I’ve done years ago often inspire characters that I incorporate into the Epic Escape Webcomic. Princess Ariana, the Mermaid you see above, was introduced in Page 134 of the Epic Escape Webcomic. She will become more relevant later on in this series. (Yes, she will be appearing again…in case you were wondering.) Like all artists, I am inspired by works of art that came before. What does a mermaid look like? Of course, I used a classical image to reflect what that mermaid would look like. The Mermaid, of course, is on some level, inspired by Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” In part, this was an attempt to create a more “mature” version that might appear in a comic book. It wasn’t a subject I would normally illustrate, however…

Okay, so here’s the history of this piece.

“The Mermaid”

So, as I was working my day job, a guy came to me with the idea that he wanted a Mermaid tattoo. On this Mermaid tattoo, he wanted an image of the planet earth as the background. He declined to pay for the image, and so it lives on in a tattooless life. I added a blue graphic image in an attempt to replicate a watery background and give it an illustration-like sensibility. Here it is for your viewing pleasure. This is not your mother’s “The Little Mermaid.” She was never intended to be a fresh faced girl looking for her place in the world. She is in fact supposed to be a “warrior” akin to Wonder Woman. We’ll see how the character is received by you, our Epic Escape family. Hopefully you’ll enjoy her story line.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the illustration.

This is where I would normally say, see you next week, but these will be coming out daily. So, see you tomorrow!

Thanks for visiting. Tell your friends!

Enjoy,
John Cross
